The Marvel Avengers are assembling again and already it’s hard to see the virtues of Ultron through the hype. The global fanboy hysteria can be wearing. Which is why a left-field glitch like Guardians of the Galaxy is so refreshing. A comical galaxy quest in the company of space scavenger Chris Pratt and his motley crew of losers, it’s a giant step away from Marvel’s usual costume hero fare (Green Lantern anyone… anyone?). Credit writer-director James Gunn, reuniting with his blue-meanie Slither star Michael Rooker, for a romp that refuses to take any of this stuff seriously. Glenn Close is in Mars Attacks! mode (with a madder hair-do) and Avatar gal Zoe Saldana is now green (at least there’s no tail this time). Quite the light show, although the extravagant eye candy doesn’t deflect from the facetious tone. It’s a likeable bit of nonsense that makes Jupiter Ascending look like a bad joke. It gets a bit Cloud Atlas crazy at the end but it’s a lot of fun getting there. The real star of the show is Bradley Cooper’s cocky raccoon Rocket. The Beatles should have written a song about him. Incidentally, Age of Ultron isn’t even the half of it. The already commissioned Avengers’ Infinity War is being split into two parts. Hollywood really should break this bad hobbit.
