Three men and two women are trapped in an office block elevator. Security guard Matt Craven and Philadelphia cop Chris Messina can’t quite believe what they’re seeing on the CCTV monitor. The devil’s in the details in a modest Twilight Zone-ish shocker, beautifully shot by Tak Fujimoto and engagingly staged by director John Erick Dowdle in the claustrophobic style of his previous film, Quarantine. Even the opening titles intrigue – the camera swooping in and around Philly’s cityscapes, upside down. The impressive orchestral score is by Fernando Velazquez. Devil was intended as the first instalment of The Night Chronicles, a series devised by story-provider M. Night Shyamalan. It remains a one-off, and Shyamalan – still smarting from a string of fantasy flops – smartly left the script to Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night screenwriter Brian Nelson.
