Paradise Lost

(2006) ★★★★

Film4: Wednesday 29 April, 1.35am

A bunch of camera-friendly backpackers – they include Josh Duhamel, Melissa George and Olivia Wilde – think there’s worse places than northern Brazil in which to be stranded after a bus crash. And look… there’s a welcoming bar on the sandy beach. Where they’ll be drugged and robbed of everything. Fates worse than death await these unlucky tourists. (The film’s original dismissive title Turistas far better suits the dark tone than its anodyne and obvious replacement.) Going from Into the Blue to Blood Beach, journeyman director John Stockwell has made the Apocalypse Now of torture-porn with an unusually grim picture that’s more believable than Borderland and even more suspenseful than The Ruins. Don’t know about exotic holidays, but it put me off steak and kidney pies for a while.
