Posted at a scientific research station in Antarctica, haunted US Marshal Kate Beckinsale has been happy dealing with misdemeanours for two years. But now she has two days to find the South Pole’s first murderer before the sun sets for six months. As John Carpenter’s The Thing proved, remote ice stations are great, claustrophobic settings for bleak thrillers. And frostbite’s a bitch. It’s the Russians who figure in this mystery, not the Norwegians, and Kalifornia director Dominic Sena keeps a chilly grip on the suspense. Refreshing, too, to see a studio picture with the confidence to end on a grace note rather than a big bang.
