Eric Bana is New York cop Ralph Sarchie, first seen cradling a dead baby beside a dumpster in the Bronx. Glaring at the mean streets with a face like Travis Bickle, he hates evil with a vengeance. Jovial partner Joel McHale and Jesuit priest Édgar Ramírez try to damp down Bana’s inner demons. “Where’s your dog collar?” Bana asks Ramírez. “I’m undercover, like you.” Which won’t be the last clumsy exchange in a murky thriller that claims on the one hand to be ‘inspired by true events’ and on the other to be ‘a work of fiction’. Whichever, it’s based on a book by the real Ralph Sarchie, who has since left the force. Filmed in putrid hues, it’s a convincingly dank and dirty work, with a completely unhinged psycho in hatchet-faced English actor Sean Harris, typically scary as a dishonourably discharged Marine with a weird hold over his former comrades in Iraq. ‘Primary evil’, the priest calls it. “Wack jobs, trust me,” says a precinct cop. And one of them’s holding a claw hammer. Director Scott Derrickson isn’t just continuing to copy other films – by mixing ritualistic elements from The Exorcism of Emily Rose with the insidious creepiness of Sinister, he’s cutting and pasting from his own back catalogue. On the soundtrack, the Doors sing People are Strange. The Monkees’ I’m a Believer might’ve been the more revealing selection.
