The lights have gone out for San Francisco 10 years after the simian virus swept the planet in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The genetically evolved primates led by Andy Serkis’ Caesar don’t want a war. True to form, the surviving humans are spoiling for a fight. Except Jason Clarke. He envisions coexistence. But we’ve taught them well – some of the apes are as devious as us. Despite the predictably sentimental plotting and a conventional score by Michael Giacchino that’s full of Hollywood uplift, there is still much to marvel at. Not least Andy Serkis’ remarkable motion-capture performance. Hard to credit that director Matt Reeves also made the found-footage fumble, Cloverfield. The script here might lack Rod Serling’s caustic wit but the deployment of that army of apes is mighty impressive. You can’t help rooting for them.
