Sky Movies Premiere : Friday 5 June, 17.45pm

An estranged family gathering in 1969 Alabama brings together a bunch of small-town weirdos and a trio of patronising Brits. Southern-fried stereotypes from Bill Bob Thornton, going from Sling Blade to Forrest Gump by way of Tennessee Williams. It looks like a film but talks like a stage play. And, alas, Sling Blade looks like a one-off in his directorial career. This is no better than Daddy and Them, the last picture Thornton directed in 2001. In fact, it’s almost as bad as Harry Dean Stanton’s 1988 Southern clan travesty, Twister (no relation to the big 1996 hit). Even actors as good as Robert Duvall and John Hurt are stymied by stodge like this. All the wit and invention appears to have been poured into the production design, although that too is muted by an extended blackout. Tippi Hedren is thanked in the end credits. That’s the back of her head in the coffin scene.
