The Iceman

(2012) ★★

Kicking off Film4’s Crime & Mystery season, Michael Shannon glowers and grumbles in the title role, a real-life 1970s New Jersey mob contract killer called Richard Kuklinski. A family man whose wife and daughters remained blissfully ignorant of his profession. Even though he killed and dismembered more than 100 victims. The surly Kuklinski loses his cool if anyone affronts his family while Ariel Vromen’s unengaging film adopts a tacky Sympathy for Mr Psychopath approach. No such indulgence for Kuklinski’s kid brother, banged up for life in Trenton state prison for killing a 12-year-old girl. “It wasn’t my fault,” whines Stephen Dorff, “she started screaming.”
