21 & Over

(2012) ★★★

Film4: PREMIERE Tuesday 9 June, 9pm

The night before a make-or-break med school interview, Justin Chon is whisked away for a 21st birthday booze up by his former highschool friends Miles Teller and Skylar Astin. It’s a night to forget, if only they could. All the trouble they get in – and it’s plenty – is entirely of their own making. Which doesn’t make it any less amusing. “So you’re not in a frat?” asks sorority sister Sarah Wright. “No,” says Astin, “because I’m not angry or secretly gay.” And he’s the sensible one. You can see that these bozos could grow up to be the Hangover guys. A contradiction in terms, of course, but you get the picture. Writer-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore certainly do. They’re the ones who created the Hangover characters in the first place. Like the disreputable Road Trip and Sex Drive, it’s an above-average example of an always popular genre: ritual humiliation. On all sides.
