Sky Movies Premiere: PREMIERE Friday 19 June, 1.30pm and 8pm

Scarlett Johansson gets under the skin of dumb blonde Lucy, an American student who turns into a high-IQ terminatrix after being stitched up by drug dealers in Taiwan. The sack sewn into her abdomen has leaked the explosive new synthetic drug – CPH4! – into her bloodstream. It should kill her, of course, but instead has a kind of Dr Manhattan effect. She’s aware of everything (except pain) and can even feel the rotation of the earth. Not such good vibrations. Because Lucy’s no longer using a mere 10% of her brain, like regular humans (possibly less in the case of Fifa executive board members, but up to 11% for Spinal Tap). She’s being empowered up to 100% (which will kill her). Her only hope is hooking up with professor Morgan Freeman, who has extensive experience of increased brain capacity having appeared in two Dolphin Tale pictures. An army of drug goons is after her, and the cops aren’t sure what to make of Lucy either. She’s unconcerned by collateral damage yet doesn’t dispose of the cornered drug scum. Perennial enfant terrible Luc Besson is in his Fifth Element here, mixing in preposterous action with Koyaanisqatsi-lite montages more suited to a toothpaste commercial and pedantic wildlife inserts (a trick Robert Altman pulled 45 years ago in Brewster McCloud). Taking a break from co-scripting the Taken flicks, Besson described his film Lucy as ‘one part Leon, one part Inception and one part 2001: A Space Odyssey’. Hmm. It’s actually the anti-2001. Much shorter than Transcendence, mind, although it’s hardly Limitless. More like the giddy limit.
