Channel 5: Sunday 2 August, 5.20pm
Young crackpot inventor Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader) has his Eureka! moment when he turns water into food. Which is fine by everyone in the rinky-dink town of Swallow Falls… until it rains a perfect storm of meatballs and meringues. Every item on the menu, from soup to nuts. The town is flattened by pancakes in a scrummy animation from Sony that’s funny, bright and bananas. Like Sony’s previous cartoon hits Monster House and Surf’s Up, it concentrates on telling its engaging story in a cleverly cinematic way, and without resorting to irrelevant pop-culture references for grown-ups. “Cheeseburgers from the sky,” says Flint’s dad, “that’s not natural.” He’s a gloomy gus, is Flint’s dad (James Caan), and he confuses his son by talking to him in fishing metaphors. This consistently inventive, unpretentious comedy is first-rate children’s entertainment that, unlike some other recent kids’ flicks, sticks to the task at hand. It never bites off more than it can chew: “There’s a macaroni on my head!” Unlike Where the Wild Things Are, it really is wild: “The pizza’s chasing us!” It makes Disney’s Princess and the Frog seem somehow fusty. “Yay! I’m a chicken!” And, compared to Mr Fox, it’s fantastic. A big colourful pile of baloney, the Cloudy/Meatballs sequel (Sky Movies Family, Wednesday at 1.05pm) was originally announced as Revenge of the Leftovers. Clearly, this food-fight menu has legs.
