Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze, resisting his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter. Like Blade II, Ghost Rider’s second outing is moved to the Balkans. Cranked up by the Crank pranksters Neveldine & Taylor with ugly violence and inhumanly callous behaviour, it somehow manages to retain the ‘12’ rating of its comic-book predecessor. The plot this time is a mashup of Terminator 2 and The Omen III. But there’s no getting around it: our hero is a flaming skeleton on a fiery motorbike. Striking plenty of poses, so we know there’s an (Oscar-winning!) actor behind all the CGI. Cage bursts into flame. Luther star Idris Elba makes do with weird contact lenses and a wonky French accent. It’s all about as subtle and aesthetic as an industrial site crane. Which, funnily enough, Cage actually manages to bring into play during one of the chaotic set-pieces.
