West Virginia’s Marshall University lost its football team – and many townspeople – when the plane returning from a game in Carolina crashed in Huntingdon in November 1970, killing all on board. And they’d just lost the damn game. With the whole town in mourning, the college is ready to give up on football, for fear of constantly reminding the bereaved of their loss. But the four surviving members of Marshall’s ‘Thundering Herd’ (three injured players who didn’t travel with the squad, and one who overslept) want to play in honour of their teammates. And there’s widespread support from the students. Effective cast – Matthew McConaughey (for once not grandstanding), David Strathairn, Ian McShane – in a moving true story that’s affectingly underplayed and made with surprising restraint by Charlie’s Angels man McG. The retro soundtrack (songs by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Creedence and Black Sabbath) is no hindrance, either.
