Coming over as hard and sarky as the manipulative minx she played in Hard Candy, Ellen Page’s Juno is a highschool teenager who’s just found out she’s pregnant after a one night stand with her best friend, scrawny Michael Cera. It’s not the kind of bump she was expecting out of life. Adoption seems preferable to abortion, and yuppie couple Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman can offer the baby a lot more than Juno. But attitudes can change in nine months… Falling between Junebug and Knocked Up, this sleeper hit panders to the audience more than either of them did. The clever-dick script is, like Little Miss Sunshine’s, over-burdened with not-so clever character quirks. Yet, also like Little Miss Sunshine, Juno was Oscar-nominated as Best Picture. Funny, huh? Fuelled by a string of perpetually chirpy and twee indie songs, it’s very well acted by the entire cast and quite well directed by Thank You for Smoking’s Jason Reitman (who’s since gone really soft with the likes of Labor Day, and Men Women & Children). Reservations remain about the script, which even 80s teen-angst king John Hughes might have considered a touch patronising.
