It’s fair to say the response to True Detective season two has been less than enthusiastic. Nic Pizzolatto’s follow-up to the 2014 TV phenomenon starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson hasn’t quite hit the mark with audiences and critics alike, with several observers critical of the confusing storyline.

However, HBO boss Michael Lombardo insists he is pleased with the second season and has even discussed the possibility of a third season.

“I think you need to watch the entirety of it,” he cautioned. “I think the season’s ending is as satisfying as any series we’ve done.”

There have been no notes from the network to Pizzolatto, who Lombardo called “one of the best writers working in film or television who takes big swings.”

Lombardo was clear HBO would do a third season and it was Pizzolatto’s decision whether to continue the series. “If he wants to do another season, I said the door is open, we’d like to do another season of it.

The penultimate episode of True Detective season two will broadcast on Sky Atlantic on Monday 3rd August at 2am, and again at 9pm.
