Bored college lecturer Jake Gyllenhaal spots his exact lookalike playing a hotel bellhop in a movie. Seeking him out is a terrible mistake… Teasing doppelgänger mystery from Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve, who makes Toronto look as strange and forbidding as the anonymous setting of Richard Ayoade’s artfully designed Dostoyevsky comedy, The Double. Villeneuve’s film is based on an unrelated Spanish novel The Duplicated Man, which is also known as The Double. Any similarities begin and end there. Despite a shared nicotine-stained aesthetic, this is a darker, creepier proposition than Ayoade’s film, much less a Franz Kafka joke, more like a Stephen King story filtered through David Lynch’s Lost Highway lens. More disquieting, less self-conscious. With an audacious ending that leaves you gasping.
