Killer Joe

(2011) ★★★

Channel 4: PREMIERE Friday 8 August, 12.05am

In debt to drug dealers, lowlife loser Emile Hirsch hires dirty Dallas cop Matthew McConaughey to kill his mother for the insurance money. Dim-bulb dad Thomas Haden Church agrees it’s the thing to do. After all, McConaughey is a professional. Flicking his Zippo lid like George Clooney in Out of Sight, McConaughey protects and serves his own interests. Which now include Hirsch’s dotty sister Dottie (Juno Temple). She’s his ‘retainer’. A kind of Blood Simplistic, this harsh and violent trailer-park comedy from August: Orange County playwright Tracy Letts is played deadpan by a cast of dubious characters with all the instincts and scruples of junkyard dogs. Truth be told, it’s hard to care what happens to any of them. Erratic director William Friedkin considers it a modern Snow White/Cinderella fairy tale. But then he’s the guy who made The Exorcist.
