21 Jump Street

(2012) ★★★

ITV2: Sunday 9 August, 9pm

Hapless police academy graduates Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are sent back to highschool as undercover brothers aiming to infiltrate a drugs ring. “They’re teenagers, they’re really stupid,” spits angry captain Ice Cube, “so you should blend right in.” In fact brainy Hill and brawny Tatum are nonplussed by the new ruling class of cool granola kids. They blame Glee. Crude laughs with a pair of cops as dozy as The Other Guys in a 21st century revamp of a late-80s Johnny Depp teen-drama TV series that mocks the source material, Dark Shadows-style. Depp duly features in a colourful cameo but, without giving too much away, he won’t be appearing in any sequels. Originally, the drama teacher played by Chris Parnell talked about doing cocaine with Whitney Houston’s niece, but after the death of Whitney Houston in February 2012 the line was dubbed over as ‘doing cocaine with Willie Nelson’s horse’. Michael Bacall’s previous scripts include Project X and Scott Pilgrim vs the World, so we should perhaps be grateful he made no mention of Whitney and Bobby Brown’s daughter Bobbi (who died last month, age 22). On a happier note, co-directors Chris Miller & Phil Lord made the excellent animation Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. And they stayed on board for 22 Jump Street.
