Knight and Day

For a shortish guy, Tom Cruise seems to make an easy target. As one of Hollywood’s celebrity Scientologists, the 5ft 7in Cruise comes in for far more stick than John Travolta, say, or Kirstie Alley. Why is that? Maybe it’s his dazzlingly conceited grin, which is put to good use here in a screwball comedy that’s put together like an action caper. The critics dumped on it, yet it’s far superior to Travolta’s last five films and, with its spectacular split-second slapstick action scenes, a much better effort than The A-Team. The efficient direction is by James Mangold, who’s generally solid (John Cusack’s Identity), occasionally inspired (Sylvester Stallone’s Cop Land). Cameron Diaz is rogue agent Cruise’s unwitting consort consort – “Please… stop shooting people!” – as the crazy-paving plot heads for the Alps. Like Angelina Jolie’s Salt (a project originally intended for Cruise), this is a confident popcorn movie. And way more fun than Cruise and Diaz had together in Vanilla Sky.
