Connecticut estate agent Michael Douglas has shunned the world since his wife died, shushing any offer of help or condolence with a sharp tongue. Moving into an apartment complex while awaiting the sale of his home, Douglas has no time for neighbour Diane Keaton, who’s trying to revive a singing career after the death of her husband. And Douglas has even less time for the granddaughter he never knew existed until his estranged son dumps her in his lap before being carted off to prison. Such is life. In the movies, at any rate. Writer Mark Andrus worked on the screenplays of Late for Dinner and As Good As It Gets back in the 90s, but his output since is somewhat less impressive: Life As a House, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and Georgia Rule all came before And So It Goes. Like Jack Nicholson, snappy sarcasm is second-nature for Douglas, but the skittish presence of Keaton revives unhappy memories of Baby Boom rather than her ‘senior citizen’ romance with Jack in Something’s Gotta Give. That funny guy playing accompanist Artie under a bad toupée is director Rob Reiner. Whatever happened to him? Rumour has it he went from Spinal Tap and Stand By Me to The Bucket List. In the 80s he could do no wrong (The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally) and the rot set in sooner than The Bucket List. It began in 1994 with the horrible quirk-fest known as North. Since when it all went south: The Story of Us, Alex & Emma, Flipped, The Magic of Belle Isle. Douglas’ new film is Beyond the Reach. This one’s mostly beyond the pale. And so it goes.
