Sky Movies Premiere: PREMIERE Friday 14 August, 11.30am and 10pm

Dissatified suburbanites Adam Sandler and Rosemarie De Witt arrange secret trysts online, unaware their teenage son is addicted to transgressive sex sites. Star-making mom Judy Greer posts ‘private’ pictures of her cheerleader daughter online. Schoolteacher Jennifer Garner rigidly polices her daughter’s phone and social networking. Jason Reitman’s deadpan satire – we know it’s satirical because Emma Thompson narrates the thing with the haughty disdain of a condescending sociologist – wants to make a grand statement about mankind’s 21st century failure to communicate. Rather like Ang Lee managed in the 20th with his masterly adaptation of Rick Moody’s novel, The Ice Storm. Reitman’s film, based on a book by Chad Kultgen, has no such benefit of hindsight. Opening spacey like Jodie Foster’s Contact by tracing Voyager I’s satellite of love, it comes back down to earth with a bump. Because every living soul in Austin, Texas, buries their faces in phones and tablets and desktops. In school halls and shopping malls people shuffle distractedly. The zombies have won. If astronomer Carl Sagan, the Woody Allen of the spheres, had ever written a global village soap opera, it might’ve looked like this. Because cosmically nothing matters, as any molecule kno. Meanwhile, in Austin, the internet is used exclusively for role playing games and sex. Usually together, Ashley Madison-style. It’s pretty depressing and, of course, it’s intended to be. Jason Bateman’s more modest 2012 melodrama Disconnect has been there, done this, to much less pretentious effect. But both are pale blue reflections of Black Mirror’s rigorous techno-savvy enquiry.
