Teenager Dylan O’Brien is dumped in a glade enclosed by four giant vine-covered walls. There’s a gateway that opens daily onto a decaying labyrinth patrolled by monstrous mechanical scorpions. Like the glade’s other inhabitants – all boys – he has no memory of his previous life. And no one has ever survived a night outside the stone walls. Here’s one YA adaptation that really is a little divergent from the formulaic dystopian norm. The lab-rat setting is oppressive, so visually it’s a bit of a drag, the palette confined to fifty shades of grey, green and beige. But the production design is impressive and the intriguing mystery – a kind of Lord of the Flies meets The Cube – leads to an unusually bleak conclusion. Like the Syfy series Helix, this sudden horizon-expanding ending ushers in an entirely new level of the game. Which in this instance is fair enough, since the first chapter is so tightly self-contained and satisfactorily – if far from reassuringly – explained. Relatively experienced Brits Will Poulter (Son of Rambow) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Jojen in Game of Thrones) are the pick of a talented tweener cast. And spare a thought for Kaya Scodelario, who arrives clutching a hastily scrawled note: “She’s the last one ever.” Not necessarily. Maze Runner 2’s Scorch Trials promises bigger obstacles in a larger landscape. There’s going to be a third episode, isn’t there?
