(2005) ★★★★

Sky Arts 1: Thursday 20 August, 9.00pm

Comfortably bourgeois Parisian couple Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche dumbfounded by the arrival of mysterious and disturbing video tapes, which have been filmed from a side street opposite their mews home. Why would they be under constant surveillance? “Whose idea of a joke could it be?” wonders Auteuil, who later tells Binoche that the police aren’t interested: “Until he torches the place or sends us bombs, everything’s dandy.” Murky motivations and secret meetings in a clinical, compelling psycho-drama from Michael Haneke, the provocative game-playing maker of art-house hits Funny Games and Code Unknown. This one’s genuinely eerie and deservedly won the Best Director gong at Cannes. Without being preachy or obvious, it alludes specifically to liberal guilt and reticence in both the colonial past and the rancidly paranoid atmosphere of the post-9/11 present
