Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

(2012) ★★★

Film4: PREMIERE Sunday 23 August, 11am

School’s out for summer but life is still a trial for seventh-grader Zachary Gordon. He’s not an outdoor person. But Peyton List is playing tennis at the Plainview country club, so suddenly he’s sporty. Big brother Devon Bostick is wilder-eyed than ever in a children’s comedy series that’s inevitably repeating itself after Rodrick Rules. The diary’s maybe now a little dog-eared but still, refreshingly, it refuses to pander in the crass CGI fashion of G-Force and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Adapting Jeff Kinney’s series of books, the three screenwriters just say no to pop culture and pimp jokes. They let kids be kids. Film4 has the first one on Thursday, 3.10pm, followed by Rodrick Rules at 5pm. Both observe the first rule of comedy: be funny.
