Channel 4: PREMIERE Sunday 23 August, 9pm
Four Oscars and four Baftas for the film of the hit stage show of Victor Hugo’s 19th-century masterpiece, which somehow made do without a libretto. Hugh Jackman is literature’s original fugitive, tragic hero Jean Valjean, pursued with indecent vigour by Russell Crowe’s psycho cop, Inspector Javert. Anne Hathaway sings her lungs out and has the Golden Globes to prove it. But it’s still the least fun anyone’s had in any musical since Evita. What’s magnificent about it is the source story, which has survived countless interpretations. It’s a great story. It doesn’t need ersatz operatic songs. They might as well make a musical of King Kong. Oh… they did.
