Film4: PREMIERE Wednesday 27 August, 1am
Nurse Calista Flockhart is drafted in as cover for the final few nightshifts at Mercy Falls, a children’s hospital that’s being closed down. Only eight children remain. No one’s upstairs, it’s been sealed off since 1959. But that’s where the noises are coming from… The children say it’s Charlotte the mechanical girl. Dark corridors, distant rumbling thunder, and a chilly autumnal Isle of Wight make an agreeable setting for a spook show that might not be as intense as Ewan McGregor’s Nightwatch, although things do indeed go bumpity-bump. Darkness director Jaume Balagueró went on to make the digi-video [Rec] series (parts one, two and four). This – quieter, creepier – is better, with some freakiness amid the frailty. And the afterlife observations of two old dears, Freda Dowie and Matyelok Gibbs, provide an echo of Don’t Look Now’s spiritualist sisters, Hilary Mason and Clelia Matania.
