Hello Ladies: The Movie

(2014) ★★★

Sky Atlantic: Tuesday 1 September, 10pm

Reinviting himself in LA as a ladies’ man, bumbling Brit Stephen Merchant pays guest-house tenant Christine Woods to make his visiting ex feel jealous. Which works well, as you can imagine.

Talented Office boy Merchant co-wrote and directed this, too, and the result is that everyone in the cast tends to talk like him, insensitive and mildly sarcastic, a bit idiotic but generally funny.

The gawky and awkward Merchant can always be relied upon to say the wrong thing, especially when he’s proposing a toast: “Here’s to a memorable evening in the city of angels… let’s hope we’re not carjacked.”

There’s a funny and surprisingly sweet cameo by Nicole Kidman, playing herself at a party. He says the wrong thing to her, too: “Are you doing an Australian accent?”
