In the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher laid down the law to Arthur Scargill’s striking miners. It was not a pretty sight. Even less an occasion for comedy, you might have thought. Unless the idea of an alliance between LGSM and NUM is amusing. LGSM? Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. As in the National Union of Mineworkers. It really happened. Though probably not like this.

“Dai,” yells Menna Trussler to Paddy Considine, “your gays have arrived.” When Ben Schnetzer’s London-based activists land in the Welsh mining village of Onllwyn, not everyone is as pleased to accept their help as Considine and Imelda Staunton. Bill Nighy, for starters, can’t keep his accent straight.

Following the lead of Calendar Girls, Kinky Boots and Made in Dagenham, this Britcom takes pride in tackling an eccentric historical footnote. The fact is, LGSM was eventually shunned by the official strike committee. And almost all of Britain’s pits have closed in the years since the miners lost the strike.

Thatcher remained in place: “One isn’t here to be a softie.” Better blatant than never, I suppose, although nothing here is as funny as the Comic Strip’s Strike! with ‘Al Pacino’ as Arthur Scargill and ‘Meryl Streep’ as his orange-peeling missus.

The producers plan to bring Pride to Broadway, à la Billy Elliot. In the immortal words of Jeff Stelling: “There’ll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions.”
