Hollywood’s having a hard time finding a successor to the magnificent Meryl Streep (still stripping greasepaint off her co-stars as she swans off Into the Woods with an embarrassing number of Oscar nominations). But we’ve always had our very own Meryl. She’s called Dame Helen Mirren.
So who’s going to inherit’s Helen’s crown? My money’s on Kate Winslet, whose versatility was apparent even in Titanic and who later won an Oscar for another bad movie, The Reader. She’s good at playing outsiders (Hideous Kinky, Holy Smoke, the good-sport swot in Enigma), and she’s often the best thing in over-reaching films. Like Revolutionary Road and Labor Day. And Little Children. Stifled in her marriage, suffocated by home comforts, bored Kate begins an affair with stay-at-home dad Patrick Wilson, married to high-flyer Jennifer Connelly.
Their affluent New England neighbours are more exercised by the return of sex offender Jackie Earle Haley to his elderly mother’s home after serving time for indecent exposure. It’s right by the children’s playground… This is all played dead straight, so the apparently satirical intent (Madame Bovary in Massachusetts?) is not always plain. The music’s certainly not in on the joke. But the nudging condescension of the title is a dead giveaway. Oh, the irony!
