Five: Friday 18 September, 3.15pm
Australian actress Poppy Montgomery as Joanne Rowling, a single parent who incorporates childhood dreams and game-playing into a book she’s writing while on welfare. Gazing wistfully at an Edinburgh book shop window, she talks to the baby who’s asleep in her buggy: “What do you think, will you ever see Harry Potter in there? Not bloody likely.”
As literary agent Andy Maton keeps telling her: “Nobody makes any money writing children’s books.” Yes, and Decca turned down The Beatles. Filmed in British Columbia, for the Lifetime Channel, this uncommonly dreary TV soap might as well be called We Still Don’t Know How She Does It. Two things I did learn: her surname is pronounced Roe-ling and the K stands for Kathleen, although her mother didn’t give her a middle name. Oh, and the only thing any writer requires is a persistent literary agent. The one here advises Joanne to get an attorney. What they probably meant to say was ‘lawyer’ or ‘solicitor’.
