Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reunited as the two stooges in the long-gestating project from the Farrelly brothers. Twenty years, and it does seem a decade or two too late. Carrey’s Lloyd is catatonic and attached to a catheter in a wheelchair, his face covered by a Biblical beard. Daniels’ Harry needs a kidney transplant. Like the script, they’re both faking it. And soon enough on another ridiculous road trip.
Although the Zamboni is no substitute for the Mutts Cutts truck (glimpsed in a blink-and-miss-it cameo). Bo Derek’s poster is still on the wall but everything else seems out of place. The 1994 original was the acceptable face of Forrest Gumpism – stupidity played for laughs. Indubitably dumb but also fairly hilarious. This mean-spirited revival wasn’t a great idea – 20 years too late and 40 minutes too long.
Most of it painfully unfunny despite Carrey’s best efforts (the way he scarfs down a hotdog is funny and scary). The hapless Daniels seems dazed and out of sorts. They even manage to mangle the first film’s finest gag: “Wanna hear the second most annoying sound in the world?” I laughed out loud once, chortled maybe twice.
