Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as 1975 California Valley teens Joan Jett (nee Joan Larkin) and Cherie Currie (real name!). Under the beady eye and blunt tongue of creepy rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon in hyper mode: “Rock’n’roll is a blood sport!”), Joan and Cherie (with three other girls, virtually ignored) will form the world’s first all-gal proto-punk rock band.
And – Fowley’s very excited by this – they’re genuine jailbait! Not such a big deal, as ittuned out, since they sounded just like Suzi Quatro. Big in Japan, though. The film, a first feature from music video director FloriaSigismondi, is a downer.
And not because of the drugs and dull music. But because, unlike the Sex Pistols, the Runaways really were pretty vacant. And this is a 70s pop biopic that lacks the class of Control and the character of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. The Runaways had six different bass players during their 15 minutes of fame, which is why Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat is playing a fictional bassist called Robin Robins.
