Sky Movies Comedy: Sunday 18 October, 6.15pm
Georgia Groome goes from the rigours of London to Brighton to playing the squeaky-clean heroine of a Nickelodeon production set in Eastbourne. Adapted from Louise Rennison’s popular books, the clumsily titled Angus, Thongs etc is a tween-set sitcom about the rather mild tribulations facing Georgia.
She’s 14 going on Bridget Jones, with a nose the size of Jupiter. Well, she said it. Angus, by the way, is her revolting looking cat. The thongs don’t figure so much. Everyone acts overbright and smiley, like they’re on children’s TV. Which is fitting, I suppose. Tacky as sherbert, it’s beyond the valley of the fabbity fab and the happy-clappy ending, especially, is as fake as anything Hollywood’s ever thrown up.
Like She’s a Man, it’s been given a very soft ‘12’. Perhaps the Bbfc were scared by the source books’ titles: Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging and It’s Okay, I’m Wearing Really Big Knickers. Talking of dodgy titles, Sky Movies Disney has Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day today, tomorrow and Friday. Missing it once would be enough.
