Despite the title, lawyer Matthew McConaughey is no ‘Honest Abe’. He’s a criminal defence attorney operating out of the back of his vintage Lincoln Continental sedan in LA – the city of angels… and dirtbags. Which one is Beverly Hills playboy Ryan Phillippe, tearfully protesting his innocence after a hooker is beaten up in her home? Flashing a shark-like smile, McConaughey’s not above sharp practice and lives by the principle of Presumed Gullible.
But he knows right from wrong. And he has one doozy of a dilemma – one client in jail for a crime committed by his other client. Adapted from a novel by Blood Work author Michael Connelly, this slick drama has a terrific cast (Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, William H. Macy, John Leguizamo) and the highly polished sheen of a superior TV crime show.
It’s also lumbered with an ‘urban’ soundtrack that’s far from Out of Sight, and ends with a truly terrible version of Ashford & Simpson’s California Soul. Aside from that, not guilty.
