Chasing Mavericks

(2012) ★★

Film4: PREMIERE Thursday 29 October, 11.10pm

Surf’s up for Jonny Weston as Santa Cruz teenager Jay Moriarty,  mentored by grouchy Gerard Butler (as Frosty Hesson!) in photogenic  touchy-feely ‘true-life’ drama put together by veteran British  director Michael Apted after LA Confidential’s Curtis Hanson fell ill.

Aiming to be the Karate Kid of surfer movies, it’s a familiar  collection of soapy clichés. The waves are deep, the rest of it… not  shallow exactly but somewhat formulaic. A ‘child of the tides’,  Moriarty was dead at 22, free-diving in the Maldives. In the film,  Weston’s childhood sweetheart looks a lot like his mom (played by  Elisabeth Shue), which is a bit weird.
