Renée Zellweger as best-selling author Barbara Novak, whose career-girl book tells women to forget the boys and focus on the bucks. Ewan McGregor is self-regarding exposé journalist Catcher Block, who vows to make Novak choke on her words.
Their names deliberately evoke the mid-20th century, just as this gaily coloured romcom recalls the battle of the sexes as fought by Doris Day and Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk. The décor is dazzling – if only as much attention had been lavished on the script.
Rock’s right-hand man in Pillow Talk and Send Me No Flowers was Tony Randall, and he has a cameo here as Theodore Banner. It was his last screen appearance. The traditional ‘Randall’ role goes to Frasier Crane’s ‘brother’ David Hyde Pierce.
