Sky Movies Drama: Thursday 5 November, 8.00pm
Russell Crowe railing against the world as tormented maths genius John Nash. Ron Howard’s Oscar-winning film turns Nash’s well-documented difficulties into a view of paranoid schizophrenia that’s as cosy as Crowe’s cardigans.
Just as Howard’s Apollo 13 lacked the political awareness of The Right Stuff, so A Beautiful Mind lacks the social perspective of Cuckoo’s Nest and the critical insight of Spider.
Jennifer Connelly is Nash’s improbably beautiful wife. Despite her Oscar and Bafta awards, she’s a strangely inexpressive actress, always has been, ever since her teenage roles in Dario Argento’s Creepers and up against David Bowie’s goblin king in Labyrinth. She looks as delicate as a porcelain figurine but might as well be made of teak.
