Following a catastrophic D-Day landing, Captain Tom Hanks and the remnants of his platoon are assigned a rescue mission: Private James Ryan from Iowa has lost his three brothers in combat and the US Army wants to send him home to his mother. Having seen so many comrades fall, the soldiers search for Ryan in Normandy with ill-disguised resentment.

Steven Spielberg’s epic Oscar-winning war drama drives home the bloody brutality of combat with extraordinary ferocity. The mission is topped and tailed by two of the most savage sequences of war on film, surpassing the impact of Stalingrad as it brings to mind the horrific violence of Full Metal Jacket.

It’s a stunning feat of film-making. Another Spielberg masterpiece? Well, yes – and utterly typical of the man’s prodigious work: a simple story, boldly told, dealing with complex emotional responses. Paying tribute to the sacrifices of the fallen, Saving Private Ryan is a great war film that, in common with all great war films, inspires passionate emotions.

It’s a humbling experience. No film is more fitting for the 11th day of the 11th month. And its legacy was the two exceptional HBO WWII series produced by Spielberg and Hanks, Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
