The Three Dogateers

(2014) ½

Sky Movies Premiere: PREMIERE Friday 13 November, 9.45am and 18:15pm

Home alone a few days before Christmas, three puppies end up in the getaway car of burglars who’ve made off with the family’s presents and decorations. With a dogcatcher on their tails, it’s time for Santa Claus to help them save Christmas. This piece of plastic trash might struggle to be bearable as a cartoon.

As a live-action ‘comedy’ with talking dogs, it’s insufferable. Proving he’s not really Superman, Dean Cain has plenty of previous in his recurring role of Ted Stein: The Dog Who Saved Christmas, The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation (yep, they really did that), The Dog Who Saved Halloween, The Dog Who Saved Easter, and The Dog Who Saved the Holidays. Which you’d think would’ve about wrapped it up.

But no. Next up for the busy Cain: The Dog Who Saved Summer and A Dog for Christmas. That’s some pedigree, chum. Writer-director Jesse Baget voices Arfamis and Barkos, a lady does the voice for pampered purebred Wagos. You see what they did there? ‘Dogateers?’ Dearie me. If the animals were farmyard mice or Canadian moose, playing around with titular puns might make some sense.

But any canine connection only works when applied to D’Artagnan. Recommending it for family audiences (“The film is hilarious from beginning to end!”), the Dove Foundation helpfully listed the uses of ‘ruff’ language: there’s one Heck, a Shucks and eight Jeezes. More pertinently, perhaps, one of the dogs is flatulent.
