Danny Trejo returns as Machete Cortez – the man, the myth, a federale hard as teak and half as expressive – sent by president Charlie Sheen to bring him the head of mad Marcos Mendez. Trejo’s handler is Amber Heard, code name: Miss San Antonio.
And Robert Rodriguez’s flip action fodder is more meat-grinder than Grindhouse, grungier than the average Mexican standoff but still as silly as his 3D Spy Kids flicks. With extra bad language and buckets of blood, of course.
The various henchmen’s death by helicopter is a gag so amusing it’s used at least three times, although William Sadler is genuinely funny as a redneck Texas sheriff. Machete Kills Again… in Space is the threequel threatened both before and after the action. Best stick with the 2010 original, which had the gumption to place illegal alien outrage at the heart of its sleazy action.
