Home Alone was released on this date (November 16) in 1990. 25 years. It’s hard to believe, for some, that we were first introduced to Kevin McCallister a quarter of a century ago.

The film was a box office hit and made a star out of Macauley Culkin, who went on to enjoy several starring roles in the early 90s as a bona fide child star before drifting into complete obscurity.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of our favourite Christmas films, we pick the five greatest moments from the movie that make us laugh every time.

1. Kevin, you’re such a disease!

Our shortest clip, but also one of the funniest. When Kevin gets into a fight with his older brother Buzz and things go horribly awry, his entire extended family take turns in hurling insults at him, with the best coming from his red-headed, acid-tongued cousin Jeff. Completely unanswerable. Kevin, who of course has a quick wit for an 8-year-old, can only muster a ‘shut up’ as a response. Classic.

2. “I made my family disappear”

While his parents are overcome with worry and embarrassment in a Parisian airport, Kevin wakes up to an empty house and is completely overjoyed. The following sequence shows exactly why being Home alone is a damn good thing. Until the Sticky Bandits come a-knockin’ of course…

3. Angels With Filthy Souls

What more can we say than watch the clip. Comedy gold.

4. The Church Scene

From the early moments of the film, we know that Kevin and his siblings fear their neighbour Old Man Marley, who is believed to have murdered his family with a shovel. His story turns out to be much less dark and in the church scene, Kevin meets the real man. It’s a touching moment and serves as the opening to Kevin’s masterplan to stop Harry and Marv from breaking into his house.

5. Kevin vs Harry and Marv

It’s an 8-year-old vs two career criminals. There can only be one winner surely, right?
