Film4: Sunday 22 November, 11.00am
At Yokohama’s Konan Academy, a tentative romance blossoms between teenagers Umi and Shun when they strive to save the school’s old clubhouse from demolition – Tokyo is gearing up for the 1964 Olympics. Nostalgic hand-drawn animation from Japan’s legendary Studio Ghibli, the first official collaboration between Tales from Earthsea director Goro Miyazaki and his father, the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, who wrote the screenplay.
Film4 is showing the English soundtrack version, which features the voices of Sarah Bolger (as Umi) and Anton Yelchin (Shun), supported by an impressive roster of vocal talents: Gillian Anderson, Bruce Dern, Christina Hendricks, Jamie Lee Curtis and Beau Bridges. Peaceful and reflective, and beautifully rendered in picture-book pastels, it’s the opposite of Hollywood’s 3D digital chaos. For some reason, it was rated PG in the US.
