Logan Lerman as over-sensitive teen Charlie, who thinks Mill Grove high school is even worse than middle school. Until he meets cute Emma Watson and her charismatic gay step-brother, Ezra Miller (the young star of We Need to Talk About Kevin). This isn’t Mean Girls or Election, or even Ferris Bueller.
It’s a more conventional strain of John Hughes-style dazed-and-confusion. Despite a canteen punch-up and emotional sting in the tail, it’s Breakfast Club-sweet. Maybe too sweet. But not so smart – none of them recognise David Bowie’s Heroes. Incidentally, though it’s never mentioned, the film is set during the 1991-92 school year, as it was in writer-director Stephen Chbosky’s novel.
