Hitler hated Charlie Chaplin, Stalin loved Laurel & Hardy, and Sam Raimi – as his Evil Dead pictures proved – liked The Three Stooges. Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso are the titular trio in a head-slapping comedy that’s a poke in the eye for all things witty and humorous. The Sisters of Mercy orphanage-saving plot, lifted wholesale from The Blues Brothers, lurches into unedifying reality TV territory – Nuns vs Nitwits.
Oh, how we laughed. But that, I seem to recall, was at the perfectly respectable TV biopic made in Australia in 2000 with Paul Ben Victor, John Kassir and Michael Chiklis as Moe, Shemp and Curly (Larry came later). Incidentally, the original casting for this long-gestating Farrelly brothers project was Jim Carrey, Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn. Seriously. Another thing to bear in mind is that the original Stooges mostly made shorts, rarely features. Bless them for that.
