(2002) ★★

BBC1: Tuesday 1 December, 11.50pm

Rival academics Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart research secrets of Victorian poets in Neil LaBute’s flip film version of A.S. Byatt’s drily dense novel. Not every book needs to be filmed, and this storm in a bone china teacup is more like a Victorian parlour game than a vivid drama.

Akin to a French Lieutenant’s Woman without any of the intrigue and, as literary mysteries go, it’s on a par with the Dustin Hoffman-Vanessa Redgrave picture Agatha (i.e. a non-event). The cloying score is by Gabriel Yared, who also wrote the Ramon Vargas song heard over the end credits. For a genuinely classy literary adaptation, try to see Sky Atlantic’s Olive Kitteridge on Thursday. That’s the way to do it.
