The Girl Who Played with Fire

(2009) ★★★

Film4: Saturday 5 December, 1.20am

Noomi Rapace returns as secretive computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, the steely slip of a girl with the outsize dragon tattoo. After she’s framed for three murders by sex slave traffickers, journalist Michael Nyqvist is the only one who thinks she’s innocent… and he hasn’t spoken to her for a year. Serpentine Swedish crime thriller, quite as nasty but so neatly constructed as the first film – for starters, Noomi and Nyqvist are kept apart for virtually the entire movie. The director this time is Daniel Alfredson, older brother of Tomas Alfredson, who made the eerie vampire hit Let the Right One In. The concluding part of a weighty trilogy – The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest – can be seen on Film4 tomorrow.
