Todd Armstrong has his work cut out when he sets sail in search of the Golden Fleece, facing danger from wing-heeled she-devils, a seven-headed hydra and, most memorably, an army of sword-wielding skeletons. Fabulous fantasy adventure with irresistible stop-animation effects from Ray Harryhausen and his legendary Dynamation crew.
They knock spots of the acting, that’s for sure. Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho composer Bernard Herrmann had previously scored Harryhausen’s 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and the music here is again thrilling. When Harryhausen received an honorary Oscar in 1992, Tom Hanks half-joked: “Some people say Casablanca or Citizen Kane – I say, Jason and the Argonauts is the greatest film ever made.” Herrmann scored Kane too.
