The Nativity Story

(2006) ★★★

Sky Movies Christmas: Tuesday 15 December, 2.50pm

Teenage Whale Rider Keisha Castle-Hughes as Mary, Ex Machina’s Oscar Isaac as Joseph, journeying to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus. An imminent arrival that’s giving Ciarán Hinds’ Herod heartburn. If any story has a right to be on TV at Christmas, it’s surely this one. Testing questions are still asked about the Nativity. Imagine how Joseph of Nazareth felt when his virginal bride shows up heavy with child.

It’s an awkward moment, believe me. Attractively scored by Life of Pi Oscar winner Mychael Danna, it’s a good-looking film, earthy and earnest, resplendent in its humility and honourable intentions. And for a Hollywood Christmas movie, it’s utterly unique – there’s no product placement. Kind of poignant, too. According to the book of Mel Gibson, it’s all going to end in the most appalling torture. But that’s another story.
