ITV: PREMIERE Saturday 19 December, 6.35pm

Wandering wizard Gandalf is looking for someone to share in an adventure. Despite his protestations, Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins is just the hobbit for the job. And what a pulsating, perilous adventure it is. Not much like Tolkien’s modest wee fable at all. More like a studio accountant’s idea of a suitably grandiose prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

Is the journey to the Lonely Mountain really so unexpected? Or simply unnecessary? With armies of slavering orcs, goblins and trolls, it all looks mighty impressive. But for long stretches it moves as sluggishly as a dragon dragging its tail, and it’s two hours before the wonderfully cringing Gollum shows up. For all Peter Jackson’s technical wizardry, The Hobbit, like Gandalf’s preferred headgear, seems somehow old-hat. Sky Movies Greats has the complete Lord of the Rings trilogy on Sunday. And they’re right – it is great.
