Can Jason Segel and Amy Adams stop evil oil tycoon Chris Cooper from destroying the birthplace of The Muppets? I’d bet Kermit the frog’s croak on it. After all, it’s the plot of A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie viewed through a nostalgic lens. Play the music, light the lights… the show must go on. Not just for the sake of the children.
But for Miss Piggy. The first Muppets film since 1999’s Muppets in Space – “Citizens of earth, the Great Gonzo is back!” – is not quite out of this world. The tour guide is Alan Arkin, the songs are by Flight of the Conchords man Bret McKenzie, and Fozzie’s jokes are still unbearable (possibly accounting for the PG rating in the US). Some might feel the celebratory air is a bit much, even for Muppets. Sky Movies Disney has the 2014 sequel, Muppets Most Wanted, at 8pm and, better than both, 1992’s Muppet Christmas Carol on Monday at 3pm.
